Plaza.
More than 50 classic Volkswagen "bugs" will fill the former TISD parking lot, as
Texas craft beer, barbecue and live music fill the downtown area.
There'll be 30 craft beers from breweries across Texas.
Dine on chopped beef sandwiches, sausage and more from the Original Rib Tickler
and Dickey's Barbecue Pit!
Enjoy live classic rock from the "Bottle Rockers" and CCR tribute band "Donnie Simmons
& Unfortunate Sons" starting at noon.

Texas Faces Power Shortages Possibly 10 Years Out

A new study suggests Texas may be having to deal with with power shortages for the next 10 years or so (source: The Statesman) . These power shortages would happen during peak demand periods each year. So for instance, on a very hot summer or very cold winter you can expect that would be the time when everybody's power goes out.
This worse case scenario occurs because too many people are demanding electricity at the same time. Combine this increase in demand from an expanding population and economy in Texas with EPA actions preventing coal fired power plants from being built. It isn't that Texas wants to pollute the environment, kill the elderly and poison small children.
The fact of the matter is that new coal technology allows for clean burning cheap coal to meet demand for electricity and still let everyone have affordable electricity.
It will always sound great to protect the elderly and the children and like you I want to do this as well but when the elderly and children are used in propaganda by green activists to the eventual hardship of every Texas power consumer someone needs to say something.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas has hired an outside consultant that will be delivering a report on June 1 on how Texas can encourage the construction of new power plants.
Right now wholesale electricity prices are too low to attract investors in new electricity generation plants and you have the EPA to contend with if you mention the word, coal.
Remember at one time TXU was planning to create at least 11 new state of the art coal fired power plants and now look at the situation?
For now Texas must work to get more commercial and industrial customers to agree to interrupt their electricity usage during peak demand times in exchange for payment.
A noteworthy aspect to getting businesses to automate electricity curtailment is that in the process they sometimes create complete backup generation systems that can produce onsite electricity through natural gas and remain completely off the grid long term.
Hopefully we will see more off the grid electricity systems that are built for these individual facilities alleviating Texas electricity demand troubles.

eye-opener for me. You can read it, ignore it, delete it, or whatever,
but I feel it is that very self-centeredness and personal apathy that
has gotten us in the shape we are in today. Whether you agree or

CHANGES ARE COMING...
1. The Post Office. Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.
2. The Check. Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with checks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never d paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business.
3. The Newspaper. The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.
4. The Book. You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book.
5. The Land Line Telephone. Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes.
6. Music. This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalog items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix.

That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider.
In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert.

If you suspect a gas leak:
* Leave the house immediately and take others with you.
* Don't use your home phone or cell phone; call your gas supplier or the telephone
operator for assistance from a neighbor's house.
* Don't light a match, cigarette, or candle.
* Don't turn on a light.
* Don't switch on anything electrical, including appliances and computers.
If you suspect a gas leak, please contact the City of Tomball immediately at 281-290-1400
during regular business. For nights, weekends, and holidays please call 281-351-5451
for 24 hour call duty or 911 in emergency cases.

Walk Tomball:
Saturday, March 19 at 9 AM
Meet us at the Depot at 9 AM for stretching followed by 1, 2, and 3 mile walking
routes. This week's 10 AM coffee will be at El Emperador - 601 W. Main. Don't
feel like walking, come for just the coffee, but remember you must walk and be
present to win great door prizes.

On Saturday, March 26 at 10 AM the Chaparral Genealogical Society will host their
meeting at the Amegy Bank on Hwy. 249, in Tomball.

The 2011 market season will focus on providing our community with 18 weeks of the
freshest, locally grown produce in town, with more selection than ever before!
The season has been revised to have produce available to you every week throughout
the heaviest produce seasons. The market will also stay open an hour later this
year to accommodate those who have ball games and other errands on Saturday mornings.

Continuity of Operations/Business Continuity Workshop: April 30 at 9:00 AM
The Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 6-hour Business Continuity
workshop at Lone Star College - Tomball on April 30. The workshop will be held
in the Elmer L. Beckendorf Conference Center from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Tomball Area Local Emergency Planning Committee,
the TEDC, and the Tomball Fire Department.
